New Heroes (13’), Kay Abaño, Germany/Spain/Philippines

Rita, a labor migrant from the Philippines, recalls the first time she left the country to work in the Middle East.Paulita, one of the founders of Centro Filipino in Barcelona, describes their early days in the city. Accompanying the meandering and intermingling narration of their experiences are images of countless other Filipinos in Manila and Barcelona – images that have been collected, compiled and edited together to approximate the collective memory of generations of overseas Filipino workers. And as this depiction and their narrations take us forward in time, a vast system of labor export is furtively exposed, asking the viewer to question a phenomenon that has long been the country's – and a people's – norm.
